VA-1 1.2 requires iOS 26 or later on iPhone, iPadOS 26 or later on iPad, or macOS 14 or later on Mac. It is one universal App Store purchase for all three platforms.

Yes. After installation, no internet connection is required to play, edit, sequence, record, export, or save presets. VA-1 contains no analytics, advertising, accounts, or telemetry.

No. VA-1 is a universal purchase — one $24.99 purchase covers iPhone, iPad, and native Mac. Sign in to the same Apple ID on each device and the app is available on all of them.

In the standalone app, tap the waveform Capture button in the transport area, play VA-1, then tap it again to stop. The completion panel lets you preview, save, share, or delete the stereo WAV. Capture records only VA-1's generated synth output and effects. It does not use the microphone or record an audio-interface input.

Create a sequence with at least one note, then tap the sequence-export button beside Capture. VA-1 renders the full loop to stereo WAV using the current preset, tempo, pattern, and effects. When rendering is complete, preview, save, share, or delete the file.

VA-1 first creates captures and sequence exports in app-managed local storage. Use Save WAV to choose a permanent Files or Finder location, Share WAV to send a copy through Apple's share sheet, or Delete to remove the temporary file immediately. No recording is uploaded by Gillespie Audio.

VA-1's built-in Capture and sequence-WAV controls are part of the standalone app. When VA-1 is loaded as an AUv3 instrument, use the host app's recording, freeze, bounce, or export workflow.

Connect the controller by USB, Bluetooth MIDI, or a class-compliant adapter. Open AUDIO/MIDI (A/M on iPhone), choose INPUT, turn on Receive MIDI, then select All Inputs or a specific device. Use the OUTPUT and ACTIONS pages to configure destinations, rescan devices, or send a test note.

Open AUDIO/MIDI, choose OUTPUT, enable Send MIDI, and select the destination. You can independently send VA-1's Keyboard, Sequencer, or incoming MIDI Thru while deciding whether VA-1 Sound continues to play locally. The ACTIONS page includes Test C4, All Off, and Panic.

MIDI Learn maps hardware CC controls to VA-1 parameters and transport commands. Tap LEARN (LRN on iPhone), touch the control you want to assign, then move the hardware control. Mappings persist locally and work in the standalone app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Connect a class-compliant interface before or while VA-1 is running. Open AUDIO/MIDI and choose AUDIO to see the active output route and connection status. If a hot-plugged device is not shown, disconnect and reconnect it, reopen the AUDIO/MIDI panel, or restart VA-1. Built-in WAV capture still records VA-1's synth output only.

User-saved presets are written to the app's local Documents storage, subject to the device's normal backup settings. Favorites, the last-used preset, MIDI Learn mappings, and routing preferences are remembered locally. Deleting the app removes app-local data unless you previously exported a copy elsewhere.

No. VA-1 is a single one-time purchase. No subscription, no ads, no account required, no tracking. Future updates to the app are free to everyone who has purchased.

First, close other audio apps running in the background. On Mac, check your audio interface's buffer size in Audio MIDI Setup (larger = more stable, smaller = lower latency). If the problem persists, press STOP/Panic, reconnect the audio interface, and restart VA-1.
